Rautavaara ..........Cantus Arcticus
A programme inspired by the natural world and in particular, birdsong, most magically captured in Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending. The cuckoo appears in many pieces across the centuries with
two of the most notable in today’s concert - On hearing the first Cuckoo in Spring and Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony. The latter was used to powerful effect in the futuristic film Soylent Green (1973)
which starred the late Charlton Heston, to evoke strong memories of how the world used to look and feel before drought laid waste the landscape.
Joseph Holbrooke’s music is both tuneful and romantic and is inspired by the magical tales of The Mabinogion stories of early Welsh history, while the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara’s
Cantus Arcticus uses recordings of real arctic birds together with the orchestra, to create a magical soundscape that truly has to be heard live.
