A Worthing Symphony Society promotion

Our opening concert fizzes with the zest and excitement of two of Mozart’s most popular ‘hits’ and Ravel’s infectious Baroque-inspired suite Le Tombeau de Couperin.

We welcome two soloists enjoying major international careers. Flautist Philippa Davies performs and broadcasts across the world from China to the USA and has performed concertos at the BBC
Proms including the thrilling premiere of Havoc by Giles Swayne. She has recorded Mozart's full repertoire of original concertos and quartets as well as William Alwyn’s flute music on the Dutton label to great acclaim.

Harpist Lucy Wakefordwas appointed principal of the Philharmonia Orchestra in 2002. She is one of the most outstanding harpists of her generation and has recorded both the Mozart Concerto for
Flute and Harp and Dohnanyi’s Concertino.

Great excitement surrounds the world premiere of the new orchestration of William Alwyn’s tuneful Concerto for Flute by John McCabe (one of Britain’s most distinguished musicians). William Alwyn is one of Britain’s great film composers having written scores for hundreds of classic films from the 1940s and 1950s including The Winslow Boy, Odd Man Out and Desert Victory.

Soloists:

Philippa Davies - flute
“A flawless flautist”- BBC

Lucy Wakeford - harp
“Eloquent, imaginative and incisive” - The Independent
