This year’s Remembrance Day concert pays particular tribute to the men and women who served at sea. The classic film The Cruel Sea, vividly brought to life the tough battle man has always faced at sea whilst Elgar’s delightful song cycle Sea Pictures, similarly deals with the fragility of man against the elemental force of the sea. The atmosphere of contemplation and reflection, particularly appropriate on Remembrance Sunday, is further enhanced by both Sir Edward Elgar and Hollywood legend John Williams whose music powerfully supports Spielberg’s epic film.
The second half of the concert is devoted to Sibelius’s most popular symphony with its uplifting and noble finale, a symbol of hope to an oppressed people fighting to fling off the yoke of tyranny.
We welcome the distinguished mezzo soprano Elizabeth Sikora as soloist for Elgar’s Sea Pictures. Miss Sikora is a regular performer with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. She has sung roles in La Traviata, Die Zauberflöte, Rigoletto, Die Walküre, Jenufa, Les Contes d'Hoffmann and Eugene Onegin among others, under such notable conductors as Antonio Pappano, Bernard Haitink KBE, Sir Mark Elder, Jiri Belohlavek and Sir Simon Rattle.
Miss Sikora’s international appearances include roles with Teatro alla Scala - Milan, Le Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Nationale Reisopera and at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, as well as guest roles with English National Opera and Scottish Opera. She toured Japan singing with the Royal Ballet, in Mayerling.
She has an extensive concert repertoire and her recent performance of Sea Pictures in London warranted this review: "…. the perfect soloist – Ms Sikora is a rich mezzo, with perfect enunciation coupled to the best and most intelligent use of vibrato I’ve heard in some time…."
