as well as the Radetzky March, Overture to Die Fledermaus, Thunder & Lightning Polka and the Egyptian March

The idea of a Viennese New Year concert was only created by the Vienna Philharmonic in 1939, the year after MGM released their pseudo-biographical film of Johann Strauss, The Great Waltz with Strauss’ music arranged by Russian émigré Dmitri Tiomkin. The music in this concert is full of fun, joy and infectious rhythms that should set your feet tapping. Some of the items show off the virtuosity of the orchestra while others call for active audience participation!

The sensational young cellist Leonard Elschenbroich joins us for Tchaikovsky’s elegant Rococo Variations - a work inspired by the darling of Vienna, Mozart. Leonard’s dazzling career has seen him perform the Brahms Double Concerto with Anne-Sophie Mutter and conductor Christoph Eschenbach at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival as well as with conductors such as Valery Gergiev and Semyon Bychkov. His debut recording featuring works by Alfred Schnittke was recently released to great acclaim.

Since his success at the opening concert of the Schleswig-Holstein Festival where he performed the Brahms Double Concerto and received the Leonard Bernstein Award, 24 year old cellist Leonard Elschenbroich has been widely regarded as one of the most important and original German cellists of his generation.

Soloist:

Leonard Elschenbroich - cello
“Depth, expressivity, charisma, perfection.  His playing is the ideal every artist searches for" - Christoph Eschenbach
