| Joseph Marcell | Rawiri Paratene |
Starring Joseph Marcell (The Fresh Prince of Bel Air) as King Lear and Rawiri Paratene (Whale Rider) as Gloucester, Shakespeare’s ultimate tragedy is one of the deepest artistic explorations of the human condition.
Old King Lear is weary of royal duties and proposes to break up his kingdom and divide it among his three daughters. This rash generosity is cruelly repaid and Lear discovers too late the false values by which he has lived.
Joseph Marcell is best known for the role of Geoffrey (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) and most recently performed at the Globe in Much Ado About Nothing and Coriolanus. Rawiri Paratene’s most famous film role was that of Koro (Whale Rider) and he received acclaim for his roles in Troilus and Cressida and Romeo and Juliet at the Globe.
Their performances complement the tempestuous poetry of King Lear which isshot through with touches of humour and moments of heart-rending simplicity, presented on an Elizabethan-style stage by a small troupe of travelling players who breathe new life into Shakespeare’s great tragedy.
